Wk 4 Reflection: How Will You Measure Your Life?

https://youtu.be/3gbq1x5BgsM In an Acton video, Sharon Mays shares her story. It was inspiring. My favorite take-away is when she explained a story about her mother. She was talking about her dream, her business idea, and her mother said, "Either do it or stop talking about it." This hit home. I talk about my dreams and ideas all the time. In fact, I spend an inordinate amount of time planning the details of my business in my mind. But I don't write them down.  If I don't write them down, I am not obligated to act on them. False.  I hope I can remember this moment of inspiration. I believe I can accomplish my dream. I believe that it is a viable business idea. Now to take the next step... I wrote down a quote from Frederick Herzberg on motivation. The most powerful motivator isn't money. (in spite of what our society wants us to believe!) Instead, it is the "opportunity to learn, grow in responsibilities, contribute to others, and be recognized for achievemen...

Wk 3 Reflection: Honesty & Business Ethics

In his BYU devotional talk, Making a Living and a Life , Elder Lynn G. Robbins shared some interesting points.  When I think of Adam and Eve, I always think of temptation. Theirs is our first story, the original human experience. Elder Robbins discusses how very little temptation was truly used way back then. " There was no coveting or jealousy, or envy, or selfishness or any of the sins that come with competition and comparison.   In fact, Satan had very little to work with - there were very few sins with which he could tempt Adam and Eve."  One temptation and Satan was a success.  He has had hundreds and thousands of years to perfect his craft. His temptations and distractions would fill volumes today. Human nature allows us many blessings and grand opportunities, and, unfortunately, a natural ability to fall to temptation.  After 27 as a stay-at-home mother, I can attest to the many distractions within family life. But I imagine there is no better place ...

Wk 2 Reflection: Creating a Life of Meaning

We were assigned Randy Pausch's Last Lecture: Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams ( http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~pausch/Randy/pauschlastlecturetranscript.pdf)  as part of our weekly reading this week. I was impressed with his credentials, his humor, his zest for life, and his humility. At the time of this lecture, he was suffering from cancer and only had a few weeks to months to live. He was introduced and honored by a list of friends, mentors, and coworkers. His resume is full of degrees and jobs that I will most likely never experience. The world of Virtual Reality was apparently shaped in large part by his innovation, creativity, drive, and passion for educating the next generations. I am not tech-savvy. In fact, most of the gaming world is completely uninteresting to me. But I found myself reading every word of his speech and then researching the man behind the words. He seemed to fulfill his earthly mission well. Randy listed the items from his childhood bucket list. There were ...

Wk 01 Reflection: It's Time to Begin!

T his is the first week of Bus 110: Introduction to Entrepreneurship with Kathi Milton. This is my second semester at BYUI after Pathways. As part of this class, I am required to write a blog to analyze and share what I am learning. Keeping an entrepreneurial journal is meant to serve as a way to track my progress and also a way to reflect and build upon my knowledge as I work towards my career goals.      This might be a great place to write down my career goals. It seems that I need to interject with a bit of history to make sense of it all. I started college in 1990. I quit in 1993 after getting married and beginning our family. We have since raised our 5 children, moved 4 times, become grandparents (x2), and are now looking forward to an empty nest. I started painting houses years ago to help a friend and was able to roll it into a part-time business. It has been a blessing to be able to contribute to the family financially while my children were in school. I wa...
