Wk 3 Reflection: Honesty & Business Ethics
In his BYU devotional talk, Making a Living and a Life, Elder Lynn G. Robbins shared some interesting points. When I think of Adam and Eve, I always think of temptation. Theirs is our first story, the original human experience. Elder Robbins discusses how very little temptation was truly used way back then.
"There was no coveting or jealousy, or envy, or selfishness or any of the sins that come with competition and comparison. In fact, Satan had very little to work with - there were very few sins with which he could tempt Adam and Eve."
One temptation and Satan was a success. He has had hundreds and thousands of years to perfect his craft. His temptations and distractions would fill volumes today. Human nature allows us many blessings and grand opportunities, and, unfortunately, a natural ability to fall to temptation.
After 27 as a stay-at-home mother, I can attest to the many distractions within family life. But I imagine there is no better place for competition and comparison than out in the professional world. Many people are often vying for a single position, each wanting to climb the ladder to success quicker and with fewer rungs than the others. The adversary is waiting in the wings at every turn.
But we can make it! And we can be successful! The Lord is on our side. We are on the earth as part of God's plan. He knew we could overcome the temptations laid out before us. While Satan is hoping we wallow in "covetousness, jealousies, self-indulgence, living beyond one's means, anger, contention in marriages, infidelity, greed and envy, selfishness, even theft and murder" our Heavenly Father has given us the Spirit, leaders, parents, the scriptures, the temple, amazing curriculum, and prayer to safeguard us on our journey. He wants us to be able to answer these questions with a resounding "YES"!
Are (you) building His kingdom, including strong and valiant families?
Are (you) honest in your dealings with your fellowmen and using your God-given talents in their service?
Are (you) filling your life with good works, that positively impact your community and world?
Elder Robbins wants us to understand that regardless of what our path looks like, we are susceptible to Satan's influence. It is up to us to keep his temptations at bay and stay close to our Savior.
I look forward to completing my college degree. My earthly mission might include a career after graduation. My hope is that I will be able to successfully balance my dreams, my responsibilities, and my faith. This is just part of a life of learning and I am grateful to have eternity to strive for perfection.
