N. Eldon Tanner in his talk "Success Is Gauged by Self-Mastery" from the April 1975 general conference, mentioned the two important elements of self-master: 1. determining your course, and 2. willpower. I have found this to be true in many factors in my own life. When I began a new exercise regimen, I studied out the best way to achieve my goal. This allowed me to determine the course I needed to take. I then used willpower to begin and be consistent in this plan in order to fulfill my goal. I was called to serve as Relief Society president over two years ago. My mind whirled at all my shortcomings and inabilities that would make this task impossible. Once I recovered from the shock, I considered what I wanted to accomplish, I researched the calling by reading the handbook, and I prayed a lot. Since then, it has taken a great deal of willpower to continue on the course, complete the tasks I set, and see improvement. Elder Tanner quotes Leonardo DaVinci,
“You will never have a greater or lesser dominion than that over yourself. The height of a man’s success is gauged by his self-mastery; the depth of his failure by his self-abandonment. … And this law is the expression of eternal justice. He who cannot establish dominion over himself will have no dominion over others.”
This thought inspires self-reflection more than any other. How can I expect myself to build a career, create a business that can support myself and others if I don't first achieve "dominion over myself".
The three videos from this week's assignment presented the same theme; family comes first. I whole-heartedly agree with this notion and decided many years ago to allow it to govern my decisions. My husband and I made this choice together after we were married. I do not regret it more a moment. Four of our children are grown and out of the house, two of them married. Nothing brings more joy to our lives than watching our children grow and accomplish the good things in life. I feel privileged to be able to be a Mother and Grandmother first. This concept is what spurs me towards entrepreneurship.
Most of my skills and knowledge have come from practical experience as a Mother. Event planning is something I have done since I threw my own birthday parties as a young girl. Five children x many years = a lot of experience coordinating parties! Through service in the church, I have been able to exercise my event planning muscles often. I look forward to learning more, refining my skills, gaining confidence, and finding success as I move forward on my entrepreneurial journey.
