Bus 210 Week 2: Entrepreneur Resources

I'm in week 2 of my 3rd semester. Small Business Creations with Dustin Wiggins is my 2nd of 5 classes for my Entrepreneurship Certificate. Assignments this week had me brainstorming for business ideas: frustrations, challenges, and disappointments that can lead to fill-a-need ideas, as well as Big Ideas for a dream business. As I think about small business ideas that are feasible for me in my current situation, I tend to be drawn to creative, hands-on, building/service ideas. A few that made the list are:

  • selling my homemade salsa
  • building flower boxes
  • creating graduation cards
  • treat of the week delivery
  • homemade bread

Some of my Big Ideas are:

  • my event venue
  • a flea market
  • homeschool co-op
  • airbnb
  • travel app
  • cabins

There is a lot more work to do. My small business idea will become my $100 challenge. Each student has to raise funds (up to $20) for a startup company. We have to run the business for at least 4 weeks and are challenged to make $100 in profit. The record so far, in Brother Wiggins' classes, is $11,000! Impressive! My natural instinct is to go at it to beat that record... I'm not sure that is the best idea. We are in the midst of a battle with our school district and I am in the parent group leading the attack. We have a million and one items on our to-do list before our daughter's wedding this summer, and we are attempting to get our home ready to sell. I do know that applying myself to this challenge will be beneficial to me. It may not turn into an ongoing stream of revenue, and it may keep me up late and wear me out, but it will build my confidence as I look ahead to the real deal. We are able to start on it already and so my mind is on it constantly. I would like to get ahead in this class. I plan on following all of the steps given because, when I started my business, I just jumped in head first. I want to learn the process.

This entrepreneurial journey is a continuation of the previous semester. My teacher encouraged me to continue writing, using this format to process ideas, walk through failures and successes, and be able to look back on my growth. So I am adding on rather than starting anew. I am excited to see pieces of the process that I am comfortable with and anxious to learn more about those steps that I skipped.
