Bus 210 Wk 8: Management & Leadership
Ok. Made it through the halfway point of the semester. Much of the reading this week was a repeat of other classes I have already taken. A great reminder to look to Jesus Christ as the perfect example of leadership. James Moss's talk from June 1977, "Sheep, Shepherds, and Sheepherders", lists these qualities we must adopt in order to be a better leader:
- Love of all sheep
- Number the sheep, measure their performance to see who is lost
- Find the lost sheep
- Help bear the burdens of the sheep that is found
- Involve others in fellowshipping the found sheep
- Get to know the sheep
- Let the sheep know you
- Lead by personal example
- Feed the sheep
- Sacrifice yourself for the good of the sheep
I like this list but especially appreciate #6 and #7. I have found great joy in building relationships with those whom I serve. These have become friendships that last beyond the initial service.
"Leadership is based on a spiritual quality; the power to inspire the power to inspire others to follow."
-Vince Lombardi
We also read President Kimball's talk, Jesus the Perfect Leader from August 1979. Jesus Christ was the perfect leader because He had the following:
1.Fixed principles: He knew who He was and why He was here. Correct and constant principles.
"those who cling to power at the expense of principle often
end up doing anything to perpetuate their power."
2. Understanding others: listening, candid, loving, forthright, firm, understanding the why
3. Selfless leadership: always puts the needs of others before his own
4. Responsibility: trusted His followers to tasks, made lasting changes, believed in their potential
5. Accountability: of self and of others
6. Wise Use of Time: be diligent, work hard, care for others, not slothful
7. Secular Leadership:
Two more points:
Hugh Nibley, August 19, 1983: leader - focused on equality, inspiring
manager - focused on own position, pomp is vital, mediocrity
Acton Hero, Ken Zolot: entrepreneurial success - are you passionately committed to a brilliant vision or insanely obsessed with a figment of your imagination?
Now to my $100 Challenge:
I failed to get my online order form built and running. I also failed to order my packaging supplies. I have been so busy with the house, the wedding plans, school rally,
and a sick kiddo and husband. No more excuses. I have to get these two things accomplished today. I plan on going live tomorrow. This will work well, actually, because Wednesdays will be a good day to make the salsa each week. I will see if how it works to take orders Wed-Wed. I'm not sure it will be the best route. Perhaps having a shorter order time (3 or 4 days) will be better. I will find out! I found 16 oz and 12 oz containers. I have decided to go with the 12 oz rather than both. I would rather sell two to someone than one of the larger ones. I also need to decide on which chips I will offer for my special grand opening deal. We have a semi-local company that sells their chips at discount from their manufacturing plant. Might be nice to use a local business.

Lots to do.
